Our History

Established in 1971, CMI General Contractors holds the distinction of being one of the longest-serving commercial design/build firms in the Mid-Atlantic Region. From our home base in Charlotte Hall, we’ve steadily built a legacy of trust, quality, and service across Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia.

With hundreds of completed projects totaling several million square feet of commercial space, CMI has been a reliable partner to businesses for over 50 years. Our leadership team and staff bring more than 300 years of combined construction experience, allowing us to consistently deliver high-quality, cost-effective buildings that serve the needs of our clients and communities.

As the needs of the Mid-Atlantic Region have grown, so has our expertise. We’ve expanded our portfolio to include everything from office, multi-family, and retail to fire stations, churches, academic institutions, medical facilities, and more. Each new project builds on our foundation of smart design, transparency, seamless construction, and client satisfaction.

Led by Vision and Experience

CMI is led by Charles W.  McPherson, President/ CEO, and Robert A. Brough, Chief Operating Officer. Both are actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the company, ensuring that each project reflects CMI’s values of quality, transparency, and integrity. With their leadership, CMI continues to grow as a trusted name in commercial design/build services throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.
